chock full ancient memorabilia
Not many people know that there’s an archaeology museum in Villajoyosa which tells the fascinating history of this area of Spain by way of artefacts excavated or discovered accidentally around town.
Situated in Calle Barranquet, the museum is chock full ancient memorabilia dating back thousands of years and chronicling the visits of Phoenicians, Greeks, Egyptians, Etruscans and Carthaginians.
The latest item on display is an Egyptian water jug dating back 2600 years which was found in a tomb and whose hieroglyphics tell an interesting story. The jar was made on New Year’s Day, when the Egyptians believed that the Nile waters had miraculous curative properties and was placed in the tomb with prayers inscribed to the gods Ptah and Neit to help its dead owner on his way to the afterlife.
Why not pay a visit to this extremely interesting place next time there’s a rainy day in Benidorm?
