Easter in Benidorm
Published on 19th March, 2005
The early arrival of Easter this year has both advantages and disadvantages for our favourite holiday resort. The downside is of course that the weather isn't as hot as some folks would like it and the ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada not much farther down the coast are doing a bomb. The good side of this is that this year we get two fantastic fiestas together. The San Jose celebrations leading up to 19th of March which feature the burning of the 'Fallas,' papier maché images usually featuring some form of political or social satire, are great fun for all and are carefully planned for the whole year before the big day. Crowds of people have already been thronging the streets over the last few days to get a glimpse of the Fallas before the 'night of burning.'
Meanwhile, Benidorm's twin Terras, Mitica and Natura, the giant theme parks just out of town will be opening their doors to the public this week. And lest we forget what Easter is all about, the religious Cofradias, or Brotherhoods, will be marching solemnly through the streets of town, retelling the story of Christ's life and death. Benidorm has 6 Brotherhoods taking part in the spectacular processions which take place on the week up to Easter departing from the local churches.
