Franco for Benidorm?

Published on 6th April, 2005

A piece of Spain's history could end up in the back garden of the former Mayor of Benidorm Pedro Zaragoza. A statue of the dictator General Franco who ruled Spain for 40 years after the Civil War has been removed from the public highway in Madrid where it had stood since 1959 and Pedro Zaragoza wants it.

The statue of Franco mounted on horseback would be placed in the huge garden of the ex Mayor, surrounded by orange and lemon trees, as a mark of respect for a man, who according to Zaragoza always treated him well. The ex mayor has written to the Government offering to pay for all transport costs of the statue should they release it to him rather than have it languish forgotten in some warehouse.
