Giant Food Bill
Published on 14th April, 2005
We've been given the details of the enormous logistical operation to keep the 1500 animals in the new Terra Natura theme park fed and watered. Over 700 tons of food is required every year to keep the animals healthy and includes both raw and cooked meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.
Almost all of the food is sourced from local suppliers in the area who unsurprisingly are happy to increase their trade in this manner. Estimates put the amount of meat supplied at 180,000 kgs per year, fruit 150,000 kg, and forage for the herbivores 400,000 kg.
Obviously the amount of food consumed per animal varies considerably with the elephants eating quite literally tons of fruit and alfalfa, and the spiders feasting on a few flies and the odd furry creature. Needless to say all the animals' diets are rigorously checked by the park's vets to ensure a happy healthy life.
