Happy Birthday La Nucia

Happy birthday to you. Benidorm's neighbour La Nucia has just celebrated its 300th birthday marking its constitution as a municipality in the year 1705.

There were, of course, the obligatory fireworks, this time set to music, which thrilled 2000 people gathered in the town in a 30 minute show charting La Nucia's history. A special musical piece, 'Celebration 1705 - 2005,' was composed for the occasion and a medieval market was held in the Plaza de San Antonio.

Both the Mayor and the towns historian noted how the town had changed over the years, at one time it was a starting point for many people leaving for new lives in the Americas and Australia, whereas now many northern European immigrants are moving to La Nucia as it has become such an attractive place to lead a new lifestyle.
