Benidorm Rug Rats

Published on 14th November, 2005

The management of carpet company Imperial Alfombras had the rug pulled from under their feet, almost literally, in Benidorm last week. They had organised an exhibition of valuable Persian carpets in the public area of the town's Hotel Don Pancho which was subject to an overnight robbery by a gang of cat (on the mat) burglars.

Making their entry via a street level window, the matnappers nicked only the most valuable of the pieces on display - one was valued at €30,000 - and made off with a cool quarter of a million Euro's worth.

The robbery probably took place at about five in the morning but wasn't discovered until 8am and hotel staff say that other than a few carpet burns there was no damage caused to the building. At the moment police have no idea who the thieves are but are looking for four men and say that they'll be 'on the carpet' when they eventually catch them.
