Baby Dolphin on Benidorm Beach

Published on 19th April, 2006

A 200lb baby dolphin was rescued yesterday afternoon from the waters of Poniente beach in Benidorm. The young Risso’s Dolphin had somehow become separated from its mother and was first spotted just a little way down the coast at La Cala in Finestrat. Bathers in the sea there alerted the police at 1pm who immediately sent a launch out to help the poor creature which was quite obviously disoriented and very weak.

Realising that they needed help, the police called in expert veterinarians from Valencia’s Oceanographic aquarium for assistance. They rushed to Benidorm and at 5.45 were able to rescue the Dolphin from the sea, give it first aid and transfer it in a special vehicle to nearby Terra Natura where it will recuperate. The vets reported that the dolphin had no visible injuries but was quite fatigued by its ordeal without its mother and will now be given a special diet to aid its recovery.

If all goes well the dolphin will soon be released and could grow to as long as 13 feet and weigh over half a ton! Awwww, aren’t happy endings great?
