Benidorm's Bigger Better Concerts?

Published on 24th October, 2006

Benidorm council hand over a cool €1.1 million

Not everybody's happy with the way Benidorm's big concert programme has been handled. What happens at the moment is that Benidorm council hand over a cool €1.1 million to a company from Valencia called Mundosenti2 which then organises the rest – the venue, artist, bars, food, etc, etc.

In 2006 the town played host to Marc Anthony, whose concert was postponed for four months, Bryan Adams, a late replacement for The Who, who pulled out because of poor ticket sales, and The Cult, whose performance drew a crowd of only a few thousand.

Opposition politicians say that the council is paying too much and that Mundosenti are not doing enough to promote the concerts and the above mentioned poor attendance figures seem to bear this out. Mundosenti2 themselves have declined to publish figures for cash taken form the box-office or bars.

Mundosenti2 and Benidorm council both agree that to attract the likes of Madonna or U2 to the town the size of the venue – the Foietes football stadium needs to increase its capacity by 10,000 to 40,000 to meet the fees of such artists. The Benidorm public have been promised two big concerts for 2007 - all we have to do is wait and see who'll be performing.
