'The Vertical City's Origins,'
It's almost unbelievable to realise that only 50 years ago Benidorm was a small fishing village of just 3000 people. The incredible story of Benidorm's rise and rise to becoming possibly the world's best known holiday resort is told in photos and documents at a new exhibition in town. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the town's first urban plan made in 1956 the exhibition, titled 'The Vertical City's Origins,' is in the Aula de Cultura de la CAM, Calle Alameda, until 27th January.
Strangely enough, the original town plan included only low level two-storey buildings, and not a single skyscraper - Benidorm's trademark – was included. It was only in 1963 when a new law was introduced which allowed high buildings and since then, when the 14 storey Frontalmar appeared on the Avenida Mediterranea, the town has never looked back.
The exhibition is a fascinating look back into Benidorm's past and really is well worth visiting, especially to see some of the lovely buildings which have long since disappeared from the town's skyline.
