Benidorm's British Boom

Published on 23rd March, 2007

Exchange rates of €1.54 to the £

Remember the old saw about our world economy – when America sneezes Britain catches a cold? The same is true for Spain and Benidorm's tourist market which relies on the good economic health of the countries which supply its visitors.
The first 2 months of the year have seen the arrival of over 6 million foreign tourists – and increase of more than 4% on the same period last year – and a quarter of them were British! In our region alone, Alicante airport saw half a million Brits pass through its portals!
Analysts have noted the improvement in the British economy, the high levels of employment, and perhaps more importantly the increase in the Pound Sterling against the Euro. Exchange rates of €1.54 to the £ mean cheaper accommodation, food, drink, cigarettes and entertainment for British visitors to Benidorm.
The tourist season officially opens for business at Easter and some hotels are already fully booked. Average occupancy rates in March have been a satisfying 70% and hoteliers are looking forward to a good start to the season.
