NYE Goings On

Benidorm was obviously THE place to be to celebrate the new year if oficial figures are anything to go by. Many hotels had to put up the 'no vacancies' signs and average occupation ran at 95% as thousands of people booked in to enjoy the special gala dinners in their accommodation.
The vast majority of the visitors to Benidorm were British – lucky to escape the terrible weather back home which put paid to many of the official celebrations in the UK.
Here the weather has been glorious by day so it was no surprise when a crowd of about 6000 attended the official Benidorm NYE celebration in the Plaza de Hispanidad. The council was expecting a big crowd and had no less than 4000 special packs of grapes and Cava prepared for the traditional Spanish welcome to the New Year. On the stroke of midnight we all ate 12 grapes for good luck in the coming 12 months and drank Cava because we like it. There was also an orchestra which played until dawn and a good time was had by all.
If you've never celebrated Christmas or New Year in Spain you really should try it – it'll probably work out cheaper than staying at home if you book early enough!
