Benidorm Christmas Merry-go-round

Published on 3rd December, 2007

There was chaos

Last week the big new roundabout which has been designed to ease traffic flow in Benidorm opened to the public. There was chaos. Obviously when a structure as enormous as this – it covers 180 square metres and can be seen from space – first hits the ground it's going to take a few coats of getting used to!

Council technicians aggravated the many problems caused by motorists not knowing where to go on the roundabout – it's on the intersection of our 4 busiest avenues; Europa, Comunidad Europea, Alfonso Puchades and Comunidad Valenciana – by closing all of them for 15 minutes whilst they finished installing the barriers.

The roundabout will soon receive traffic entering from 14 lanes, which should be fun given the Spanish driving philosophy of 'thou shalt not give way to anyone' and will be controlled by traffic lights at peak times. The technicians reckon that with some clever timing on the lights they'll have traffic flowing freely in no time at all. Sounds like the triumph of hope over experience to us!
