Benidorm: 682 Not Out

Published on 14th May, 2007

a bit of a knees up had been organised

When you look at Benidorm today with its high rise hotels, skyscrapers, modern boulevards and busy traffic filled streets you'd be hard pressed to imagine that it's over 600 years old. In fact it celebrated its 682nd birthday the other day which marked the granting of its City Charter on May 8th 1325.

On that day Admiral Bernat de Sarrià conferred city status on the tiny settlement and allowed the small group of fishermen and labourers to go about their business here.

As usual, on occasions like this, a bit of a knees up had been organised in the form of a medieval market in the old town with lots of traditional products, food and wine on sale, and of course lots of music and parades. Believe it or not, there was a big fireworks display to finish it all off – that's a new one on us!
