The big natural park on the outskirts of Benidorm, the Sierra Helada, is being replanted. The Sierra, which covers some 5653 hectares, is the most visited natural park in the entire province of
Valencia and is extremely popular with hikers and those interested in the natural world.
Unfortunately some of the indigenous species of plants and flowers here are endangered and so the environmental department has set to work to put things right. Ever since the province's 'tree day' on
31st January, the department's tireless workers have been out replanting the area.
The new plants have come from a special garden centre and have been cultivated from seeds taken from the Sierra Helada in years gone by. Latin scholars will jump at the chance to translate Juniperus
oxycedrus, Matiola sinuata, Teucrium dunense, Glaucium flavum and Crithmum maritimum which are all now enjoying a new lease of life on the high sierra.
