Waste not, want not

over 2.5 million litres of water
With a climate as hot and dry as Benidorm's we're all familiar with the need to conserve water wherever possible and to have a delicious cooling dip in the pool when the temperature hits
'scorchio.'
Now it's November and our pools are feeling the effects of Global Cooling with only hardy souls dipping a big toe in, so what to do with all that water? Since 2003 the council have been emptying
Benidorm's pools (it's cheaper to have an empty pool in winter than to pay for chemical treatments and pumps) and using the water to clean the streets and irrigate public gardens.
This year over 2.5 million litres of water has been drained from 12 pools in town with the figure obviously likely to increase as the months pass by. Last year the water from 29 pools was used
– from 40,000 litres in a small pool to a whopping 1 million litres in some of the big pools – and the council hope to surpass this number this year.
Environmentalist will be pleased to hear that the pool water is treated to remove chlorine and other chemicals before it is used on the town's flora. Well done the council!

Where am I?
