Benidorm: We got the Power

a shilling in the meter

The demand for electricity in Benidorm in the summer must be absolutely enormous. Think of all those neon lights, air-conditioning units, drinks chillers, beer pumps, kettles making cups of tea when the adverts come on and all concentrated in a small area.

For one reason or another – maybe the mayor forgot to put a shilling in the meter, a fuse blew, or it rained – there have been a series of 'power outages' in Benidorm over the last couple of summers which have left everyone (including giant theme park Terra Mitica) in total darkness.

This year some bright spark in the electrical company Iberdrola has come up with the idea of installing three new electrical transformers in a network round the town centre which will prevent 'almost 100%' any cuts in power in the area.

So from now on, romantic meals by candlelight will be by choice, not necessity.
