Benidorm: A New Brush Sweeps Clean

€36 million in unpaid invoices

It won't come as a surprise to hear that as a result of the recent coup d'etat in Benidorm local government the new mayor is discovering the odd skeleton in the former mayor's closet.

Apparently, the private company contracted to clean the streets and collect rubbish is owed a staggering €36 million in unpaid invoices by the council and there isn't enough money left in the kitty to pay them.

It gets worse, because with interest payments the debt could easily ascend to €40 million! If the council were to increase the local rates to pay off the contractor, it would mean an extra €522 from every man, woman and child who lives in Benidorm.

It probably won't come to that stage as the council has approved a motion to seek credit of €29 million to pay its creditors, €10 million of which is earmarked for RCC, the cleaning company.
