Benidorm Tram: Year One
increase in frequency of the trams
It's exactly one year since the new super tram system arrived in Benidorm and what a year it's been! The number of passengers using the route from Alicante's central market all along the coast to Benidorm has doubled.
Around 1.4 million passengers have used the service since it became possible to travel the whole route without changing from tram to train. The previous year, when passengers had to get off the tram and then wait for a train on the old railway lines, only 0.6 million used it.
The modernisation and conversion of the old railway lines has also meant an increase in frequency of the trams – there's now one every 30 minutes – which have a capacity to travel at 100 kph. They rarely reach this speed as there are so many stations along the route making this a convenient way to travel for the hundreds of thousands of people who live along it and the millions who holiday here.
