The Slow Train to Denia
do some sightseeing
The works to improve the railway connection between Benidorm and Denia are in full swing and a stretch of line between Altea and Calpe is now closed for the next few months. So, to travel from our favourite resort to the port of Denia and see some quite spectacular scenery along the way now takes almost 2 hours and involves a bus transfer in the middle of the route.
The 51 kilometre journey is along lines which were constructed in 1915 so the train travels at an average speed of only 34 kilometres per hour which means that it's perfect for holiday makers who are not in a rush to do some sightseeing.
Denia itself is well worth a visit, with an old castle, a busy port, some good shops, bars and restaurants and a long sandy beach, there's plenty to see and do. A return ticket costs less than €6 – really good value – and out of interest, the fare is the same into the lovely city of Alicante from Benidorm, with a journey time of around an hour and a quarter.
Why not take a trip on the tram?
